When Richard Money secured the signature of Clayton Ince in the summer of 2006 little would he have known just how big a favourite the big man would become. Quite simply, the decision to bring the Trinidadian to Bescot was the single most important one ‘Dicky’ would make during his eventful time with us, as he brought in not only a very good goalkeeper but a huge presence around the club and a great calming influence which would quickly spread around the squad.

I’ve had better evenings!

When we were relegated at the end of the 1989/90 season, our second demotion in a row, I saw it as not all bad. The cloud had a couple of silver linings. First of all we’d soon be moving to Bescot Stadium – the “most modern stadium in the country” – complete with just as many view-obstructing posts as Fellows Park, no under-soil heating and no cantilevered roofing. Still, it would be ours(!) and it wouldn’t be likely to fall down during the next strong wind.

Square Pegs, Round Holes and Another Home Defeat

I went to yesterday’s game against Millwall and saw another depressing home defeat, our eighth already this season in all competitions. It’s now Sunday lunch time and, try as I may, I can still see no logic in some of Jimmy Mullens’ positional choices for the match.

The Local Boy Done Good

A popular topic of conversation when fans of any one particular club get together is that of a favourite ever player. We’ve all taken part in Who’s Your Favourite Saddler? It’s always a decent bit of fun so I’d like to put forward my nomination. A lot of our more, er, ‘experienced’ fans will probably go for Colin Taylor, Tony Richards, Alan Buckley, or Bill ‘Chopper’ Guttridge and younger ones might suggest Jimmy Walker, Ian Roper, Martin O’Connor, Jorge Leitao or one of the other deserving cases that are slipping my mind. My favourite Saddler isn’t any of these.

In Praise of Rene Gilmartin

If there’s one thing this young man doesn’t lack, it’s patience. We first saw him when managed by Paul Merson, when he played a few games due to injury to Andy Oakes and before Joe Murphy came in on loan, although one of these games did at least allow him to show his talents to a wider audience when appearing in the televised FA Cup tie at Merthyr Tydfil.

If you were there you’ll know how bad a performance this was and if you weren’t there then think yourself lucky. We met opponents of a different class to ourselves and were murdered from the moment the first goal hit the Gilbert end net. MKD were quicker to the ball, actually seemed to have a game plan and basically walked all over us.

In Defence Of Ishy

No-one would have been the least bit surprised to see Ishmel Demontagnac dismissed by the club for what they say was ‘three years of indiscipline’. The match-going fan is rarely privileged to know the ins and outs of training ground/dressing room goings on but there have been rumours about his behaviour off the pitch and we’ve all witnessed his antics during games. How many of us have refrained from comments about how long it’d be before he got sent off? Not too many, I’d wager.
