Darren Byfield has been made the captain of Walsall for the up-coming season reports suggest.
The rumours have built up all day, with a local radio station also carrying the story and it was confirmed by manager Chris Hutchings at Walsall’s Meet the Manager evening on Wednesday night.
Hutch said if the captaincy did not work out, he’ll take it off him and also noted Richard Taundry had entered into his thoughts for the role.
Darren is the senior pro in the side next season, our ‘named striker’ and will have to lead from the front, using his experience to guide a young team through what will be a tough campaign with big names such as Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton all in the mix with big challenges expected from Huddersfield, Peterborough and last season’s beaten finalists Swindon Town.
Darren twittered earlier …. ‘Just had the best news ever, feel like a little kid in a sweet shop’ followed by ‘I think people think I’m mad right about now walking around wid a big smile on my face’
This could be a smart decision from Hutch, showing Darren he’s the main man in the dressing room, focus his mind and make a visual show of his importance to the side. When on-song Darren has the potential to get a lot of goals and he’s a striker who probably needs to know his importance. When he carried the armband last season it was evident in his performances the pride it gave him, which he channelled into his displays for all to see.
