Walsall have today made a double signing to boost their ranks. As expected, Chris Hutchings has fought off reported interest from Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday to recruit forward Jon Macken on a one year deal plus an option for a further year. Surprisingly, he has also added West Bromwich Albion youngster Reuben Reid on a five month loan deal. Both players go straight into the squad to face Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
Macken signs after being released by Barnsley at the end of last season. He has trained with the Saddlers all week and featured in a reserve fixture on Tuesday evening. He will wear the number 10 shirt, and will probably start the match on Saturday, as Darren Byfield is reportedly not 100% fit.

Reid was signed by WBA following a prolific season with Rotherham United in 2008/2009, where he bagged 18 goals in 41 appearances. He has found his chances limited at the Hawthorns, and went out on loan to Peterborough in the second half of last season, making 13 appearances as he tried to help them avoid the drop into League One. His loan deal with the Saddlers will run out just after the new year, and he will be hopeful of impressing as his contract is up at the end of the season.
