Southampton’s game at MK Dons at the weekend has been postponed in honour of Markus Liebherr, after the Dons accepted The Saints request to call the game.
Hundred’s of tributes have been paid to Liebherr, whose death was announced last night. Flags at St Mary’s Stadium, one bearing the club crest and the other of his native country, are flying at half-mast. Last night scores of fans, many fighting back tears, converged on the stadium as the news broke.
Shirts, scarves, flags and flowers were laid in front of the Itchen Stand, many bearing heartfelt messages of thanks and sorrow.
MK Dons Chairman Pete Winkelman said: “Having recently lost my own father, I can understand just what a difficult time this is for all concerned.
“On behalf of the board of directors, the manager, the players, staff and supporters of our club, I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to Mr Liebherr’s family, friends and everyone associated with Southampton Football Club.
