Memory Lane – New Years Eve Fixtures, A Seasonal Look Back

The first ever game on this day in the club’s history was way back in 1888 in the non-league days and a friendly game took place at Burnley and Walsall lost the game 1-2.




There was a gap of four years when Walsall played away at Burslem Port Vale and the home side ran out 3-0 winners in a Second Division game. 1898 saw another away game, this time at Loughborough and this ended in a 1-1 draw.


The club lost its league status in 1901 and in a friendly game in 1904 lost away to Aston Villa Reserves 0-8. The only other game on this day in that period was in 1910 in a Southern League Division Two game which saw a 1-3 home defeat against Croydon Common. Football League status returned in 1921 and that New Year’s Eve Walsall recorded an away win at Halifax Town. 1927 saw a home game against Bristol Rovers which Saddlers lost 1-2.


There were two away games in the 1930′s, a 0-0 draw at Hull City in 1932 and a 1-3 defeat at Bournemouth in 1938. There were no more games on this day until 1949 when Walsall travelled to Northampton Town and lost 0-2. 1955 saw a trip to Newport County and again the team suffered a 0-2 loss. 1960 saw a trip to Plainmoor and this time Walsall lost 0-3. There was a home game at Fellows Park in 1966 and Gerry Summers scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot to give Saddlers a 1-0 win.There then followed a gap of 11 years before a visit to Cambridge United occurred in 1977 and this game ended 0-0.


Gary Childs got the only goal of the game in 1983 at Preston North End and in 1988 there was a 0-1 defeat at Bradford City. The first game on this day at Bescot Stadium took place in 1994 against Doncaster with Chris Marsh on target in a 1-0 win and in 2005 against Blackpool Matty Fryatt had to go off after just 10 minutes with hamstring trouble and James Constable, on loan from Chippenham Town, came on as a substitute and got two early second half goals to give Walsall a 2-0 win.
