Match From The Day – Southampton (H) 2009

Memory LaneWalsall Web Fans looks back to the first game played between Walsall and Southampton since the 1962-3 season when the two teams locked horns at the Bescot Stadium on December 5th, 2009. The Saddlers went into this game on the back of a five game unbeaten run and were handily placed in seventh position in the League One table a point behind Bristol Rovers. The Saints were in pretty good form themselves four games unbeaten but found themselves in 20th position, due to their ten points deduction.

‘TheSaddlers’ At Charlton Athletic – Match Preview

Fthesaddlers-atortunately, we didn’t lose last weekend though perhaps it helped that we didn’t play a game. This week, we won’t be so lucky. The game against Charlton has, of course, been moved to a Sunday as they didn’t want to play two games in forty-eight hours. Yet, they’ve a game on Tuesday; a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy regional semi-final against Brentford. It doesn’t make sense, but then again football rarely does.

Match From The Day – Charlton (A) 1980

Memory LaneWalsall Web Fans looks back on a Tuesday night game between Charlton Athletic and  Walsall at The Valley on October 7th, 1980. Walsall were finding it hard to adjust to life back in the Third Division following on from their promotion in the summer from the Fourth Division under player-manager Alan Buckley with only four wins from their opening eleven league games. Charlton too had won  just the four games going into this fixture. Charlton were 13th and Walsall 14th in the table although Charlton had a game in hand. Buckley had recalled 34 year-old defender Colin Harrison to the squad and named him as substitute. Kenny Mower started the game for The Saddlers, deputising for the injured Brian Caswell. Martin Conneally  was again between the sticks, standing in for the injured  Neil Freeman.
