Walsall Web Fans looks back at a Third Division game between Notts County and Walsall on November 8th 1986 at Meadow Lane. Following a terrible start to the season Walsall went into this game unbeaten in four games. Tommy Coakley was happy to field an unchanged side. Walsall included former Notts favourite Trevor Christie in attack whilst County included two men who were later to have spells with The Saddlers, Ian Mc Parland and Mark Goodwin. Walsall started off quite brightly and made most of the early running. David Kelly opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Home defender Benjamin made a right hash of an intended back pass and ‘Ned’ darted in to notch his 12th goal of the season. Both sides finished the half in positive style and Gary Childs scoped one over the bar whilst Goodwin had a great chance to draw his side level but his shot was too weak to cause Fred Barber any trouble

Training is going pretty well at the moment. I’ve had a few minor issues lately with tight glutes and lower back which has caused a few aches and pains, but it hasn’t stopped me doing too much. The cold weather was a bit more of a problem; I tend not to run in the snow and ice as it can be dangerous, and I wouldn’t want to risk a silly injury because I tried running in it. So that kept me in for a few days but the minus temperatures didn’t stop me at all. Some people may have noticed from my playing days that I never wore a long sleeve shirt unless my short sleeve shirt was ripped or completely soaked/caked with mud at half time. I’m used to the cold now!
